So un-enthused was I to write a season preview for the Dragons, as soon as the task was handed to me, I swiftly consulted Airtasker for some assistance. $20 later and voila! One season preview.
With the 2017 Season about to start St George Illawarra Dragons is already feeling the pressure. With the loss of experienced players such as Benji Marshall making the classic move north to Queensland to the Broncos, Ben Creagh to retirement and without Ben Hunt’s sign up to the team till the 2018 season the team has lost a large amount of experience.
Adding to the pressure steamer is the heart breaking loss of Drew Hutchison to an ACL injury kicking him out of this season. It was hoped that Hutchison would breathe a new life into the team’s game as well as replace Marshall as the team’s playmaker. Now with his injury watching his team play from the sidelines, it means that the team has to scramble to find a player to fill that position with names such as McCrone, Nona and Widdop thrown about to step up and deliver for that position.
While it’s pitted to be a tough year for the team, it’s going to be an even tougher year for the Dragon’s coach Paul McGregor whose contract is up for renewal at the end of this season. McGregor, who is now off contract can’t afford to suffer a repeat of the 2016 season which saw the dragons score only 58 tries, have five successive defeats between rounds 17 and 22 and finishing a dismal eleventh. If they do, then it may be the case that the dragons will be looking for a new coach for the 2018 season.
So this season, the team and its coach can’t afford the same lackluster season that it experienced last season only averaging a poor 2.41 tries per game. The team is going to need to pick up the ball and run hard to produce some stellar results if they are to be a team to be reckoned with this season.
Big thanks to Kristan H. for his efforts. Go check him out on Airtasker. He also does flat pack builds and delivers KFC.
